Understanding the Importance of a Daily Routine

There are many benefits to having a structured daily routine. When you have a daily routine, you give yourself the opportunity to get everything you want to get done within a day. While some may think that having a daily routine would bring too much order and stress with trying to follow it. However, many others and I have found that following a daily routine allows for more peace and joy knowing that everything that needs to get done will or has.

The same as morning and evening routines, a daily routine can enhance productivity and well-being. When you have a routine to follow, you are less likely to spend your time scrolling on your phone or just sitting on the couch. Not necessarily because you don’t want to do anything, but you don’t know what to do or where to start.

If you don’t already have a morning and nighttime routine, you should definitely start with those and then build your daily routine. If you would like help to know where to start, I have a blog post about each, which you can find under the “lifestyle” tab on my page.

Identifying Your Ideal Daily Routine

Daily routines are definitely not a one-size-fits-all. What works for you will not necessarily be the same as what works for someone else. You have to take into account your work hours and what you want to get done within a day. For example, I work from 8-3, so my daily routine is going to look quite a bit different from someone who works 4-9 PM.

Another thing to consider when developing your daily routine is your personal goals. If your goal is to continue your education, then you should add that to your daily routine. Be creative and be flexible, take some time to figure out your goals and your priorities.

One of the best parts about creating a daily routine is that you can always change/edit it until it works for you in this season of your life. I used to think that once I created a routine, I had to stick with it, but then I realized that when my season changes, so should my routines.

Building Your Daily Routine Step-by-Step

To start building your daily routine, you should first reflect on what you already do every day. What things have become a habit or a routine, either by accident or on purpose? Then decide which habits you want to keep and which are no longer serving you. For example, if you recognize that the first thing you do when you wake up is get on your phone, and you no longer want this to be a habit, then we need to make it so our daily routine doesn’t include this habit.

Some days are going to look different from others, work days, weekends, holidays, etc. Again, this is just a guideline for you so that you can get everything done in your day that you want to. This is not something that should control you. However, no matter the day, you should try to include a good balance of work, leisure, and self-care. This helps you not to get burnt out, but also to get stuff done.

To truly benefit from your daily routine, you should keep a notebook or use your phone to take notes for the first week. Write down what you love and what is not working. Change things up. Track how well you are following your routine, and see what is causing you to fall short.

Tips for Sticking to Your Daily Routine

Common reasons people don’t stick to their daily routine are that it isn’t achievable. They have added things that, in hindsight, look like a great plan, but they don’t serve this season of their life. To avoid this, start small. For example, if you want to run more, but at this point you don’t run at all. Adding “run 10 miles” to your daily routine isn’t going to last very long. Instead, start with 1 mile or even start walking, and then go up from there. Consistent baby steps forward are better than constantly taking 10 steps forward and 20 steps backward.

You will not stay motivated with your daily routine. Motivation fades away as soon as something gets uncomfortable. You have to be disciplined to stay consistent with your daily routine. Remember how you feel on the days that you complete your daily routine, and eventually it will get easier. But also give yourself a break when you’re on vacation, or it’s a holiday. You aren’t a robot, and you aren’t meant to act like one.

At the end of the day, any kind of routine is meant to help you enjoy your days more while getting done the things that you need to. A daily routine can be extremely beneficial to you if you use it the right way.

This habit tracker can make adding new habits to your daily routine a lot easier. You can keep track of what habits you want to add and how well you are following through with them.
