This time of year comes with many different emotions. There is excitement about the new year, motivation for new beginnings and goals, stress about accomplishing everything, and also sadness that comes with the end of the holiday season.

Personally, I love the New Year because I enjoy the idea of new beginnings. However, I also feel stress that comes with the New Year’s traditions because I feel that I have to be perfect. For example, if my New Year’s resolution is to work out every weekday, and I miss a day, then I feel like I have to wait until next year to actually fulfill this resolution.

So, what are we going to do about this?

Something that has become very popular recently is the idea of having a word for the year. This word becomes your focus for the year, and your “goal” for the year is to embody this word more. This method has been seen to be easier to stick to because there is less pressure around the resolution, and it simply focuses on becoming a better version of yourself.

Within this one word, you can create little goals that will help you to live out this one word. My husband participated in this process this year, and his word was “discipline.” Within this, he created little goals for himself, like the time he wants to be at work every day, getting himself more organized with planners/calendars, etc.

Are resolutions pointless?

Not necessarily, however, you have to know yourself and cater to your specific personality in order to accomplish these resolutions. For example, if your resolution is “I am not going to go on my phone for the first 30 minutes of my day,” but you know that the first thing you are going to want to do in the morning is grab your phone, then you will need to put your phone somewhere else. You have to set yourself up for success.

Resolutions are difficult because people are motivated when they create them, but when they are no longer motivated, they stop pursuing this resolution. The problem with this is that you will not stay motivated for very long, and that is why you have to be disciplined.

At the end of the day, you have to figure out what is going to work for you and set yourself up for success. It is not about being a completely different person in 2027; it’s about being a little bit better.
