What is the importance of a nighttime routine?
There is a lot of talk around morning routines, but really your morning routine starts at night. I know that doesn’t make any sense, but just hear me out. If you don’t set yourself up for success the night before, then walking through your morning routine is going to be a lot more difficult.
When you create a nighttime routine, you are creating habits that relax your body and help your body to know that it is time for bed. At this point, we all know how important sleep is for the body, and your nighttime routine sets you up to have a great nights sleep.
At the end of the day (literally because it’s nighttime), an established nighttime routine improves both physical and mental health. Northwestern Medicine explains that routines help people manage stress more efficiently, sleep better, eat healthier, and get active.
How do I create a nighttime routine?
Find things that relax you and bring you peace and joy. Think of things that are going to make you feel good and make you excited for the evening, and you know are going to help you sleep better. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Once you think of a few things, write them down and maybe write down what time you want to start your nighttime routine. Figure out what time you need to go to bed to wake up to your first alarm (I know, crazy!).
The last and most important step is to stick to it! Yes, if something no longer works for your season of life, then change it up, but stick with the things that work. That is when you will feel and see the biggest impact: when you are consistent. It can be hard to remain consistent but when I don’t want to stay consistent with my nighttime routine, I try to remember how good I feel when I am consistent and that usually helps.
What should be in my nighttime routine?
Like I said earlier add things that relax you and bring you peace and joy. Different things relax and bring joy to different people. There isn’t a one size fits all. However there are a few things that are common within a nighttime routine that helps people relax.
Some of these things include:
- Drinking a cup of caffeine-free tea
- Putting your phone away for some time before bed
- Read before bed
- Make a nutritious dinner
- Don’t eat after a certain time
- Light a candle
- Skincare routine
In this season of my life, this is how my nighttime routine looks:
- Start dinner at 5pm
- Eat dinner and spend time with my husband
- Clean up from dinner and just from the day (a lot of people call this “closing down the house”)
- Make a cup of caffeine-free tea
- Put my phone away at 9pm
- Get ready for bed (take out my contacts, wash my face, brush my teeth)
- Get in bed between 9:30-10
- Write in my journal
- Read a chapter of my book
- Go to bed! 🙂
